The Banners Are Back: Bedford’s “Hometown Heroes” Take to the Streets

If you’ve driven through downtown Bedford this week, you may have noticed some new (and familiar) faces looking back at you. The City of Bedford has officially begun installing the 2026 Hometown Heroes Banners, transforming the streets along John Williams Blvd. (starting at Lincoln Avenue and extending westward) into a moving gallery honoring local veterans and active-duty service members from Lawrence County.
The program, which launched in 2025, has quickly become a beloved spring tradition. It publicly recognizes the service and sacrifice of Lawrence County residents — past and present — who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Each banner features a photograph of the honoree, their name, branch of service, and era of military service. Banners serve as a visible tribute along John Williams Blvd.
This week marks the final “last call” for new banners. The registration deadline is the end of the business day on Friday, April 3, 2026. Those who sponsored a banner in 2025 do not need to re-register — their existing banner will return.
Why It Matters
For many residents, the appearance of the banners signals the unofficial start of spring in Lawrence County. It’s a heartwarming, non-political story of community gratitude — families seeing fathers, grandmothers, siblings, and neighbors honored on the very streets where they grew up.
The program expanded for 2026 due to strong interest in its debut year. Active-duty service members’ banners will fly for the full season (May 1 through November 30, 2026), while veteran and in-memoriam banners will rotate (minimum 8 weeks each) to allow more families to participate based on available space.
A Community Effort
The Hometown Heroes Banner Program is a collaborative initiative between the City of Bedford and local families. Sponsors pay $100 per banner (paid directly to Mikels Signs), which covers design, printing, installation, and removal. Families provide a high-quality digital photo (JPG, JPEG, or PNG) and service details. The city’s Street Department handles installation and safely stores the banners afterward.
Eligibility is open to anyone who has lived in Lawrence County at some point (past or present residency) and served or is serving in any branch of the U.S. Armed Forces. This includes active-duty personnel, veterans, and in-memoriam tributes.
Banners are produced locally through Mikels Signs (3617 Washington Ave, Bedford).

Quick Fact: A Busy, Feel-Good Weekend Ahead
As the banners go up, Bedford is also preparing for family-friendly Easter events. The community Breakfast with the Bunny and Easter Egg Hunt (hosted in partnership with the Bedford Masonic Lodge and Parks Department) are scheduled for Saturday morning, April 4, 2026, at Murray Park. Between the heroes standing watch on the poles and kids hunting eggs in the parks, it’s shaping up to be a classic feel-good spring weekend filled with gratitude and small-town pride.
