Enjoy the Growing Possibilities as Bedford's Garden Park

BEDFORD — Tucked at 416 H Street (near the corner of H and 5th), Bedford Garden Park is quietly one of Lawrence County’s best community assets — a place where neighbors grow fresh food, kids play, and the whole community connects.
Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just want to try your hand at tomatoes and herbs, here’s everything you need to know about how Bedford’s community gardens work, their history, costs, and what’s happening right now in 2026.
How It Works
Garden Park offers dozens of individual garden plots (roughly 60–72 plots of varying sizes plus raised beds) where residents can grow vegetables, herbs, flowers, and more. Gardeners plant, tend, and harvest their own plot. Many use the produce for their families; some share extras with neighbors or local food pantries.
The park isn’t just plots — it’s a full community space featuring:
- A tool shed with a tool-share program
- Fruit trees (apple, pear, peach) and a wild blackberry patch
- A quarter-mile paved walking trail (just completed in April 2026)
- ADA-accessible playground
- Open shelter house (first-come, first-served)
- Restrooms
- Beehives and pollinator features
- Born Learning Trail and a memorial rose garden
The entire three-acre site is fenced and maintained by the Bedford Parks and Recreation Department with strong community support.
Rules are posted on the bulletin board at the south gate entrance. Key points: respect other people’s plots (no harvesting from plots that aren’t yours), keep your area tidy, and enjoy the shared spaces responsibly.
When Was It Created?
The current Bedford Garden Park opened in 2017.
It replaced an earlier community garden that had to close when the land was sold. Determined to keep the program going, the Bedford Parks and Recreation Department partnered with Live Well Lawrence County and secured a major land donation plus startup funding from the Bedford Urban Enterprise Association.
Community members, local organizations, schools, Master Gardeners, 4-H, United Way, and hundreds of volunteers came together to build the new park. A successful Patronicity crowdfunding campaign helped push the project over the finish line. Today it stands as a model of what strong local partnerships can achieve.
Costs to Participate
Great news for Bedford residents: Garden plots are free for city residents (confirmed in Mayor Sam Craig’s April 2026 update).
Non-residents or those wanting additional space should call the Parks Department for current details — the program is intentionally kept accessible and low- or no-barrier so everyone can grow fresh food.
What’s Happening Right Now (Spring/Summer 2026)
- The 2026 season is in full swing (plots typically open late April).
- The new paved walking trail is open and already popular.
- Mayor Sam Craig highlighted ongoing updates and the free-plot program in his April “From the Mayor’s Desk” video.
- Educational programs, volunteer workdays, and youth events continue with partners like Purdue Extension, Master Gardeners, 4-H, Boys & Girls Club, and local schools.
- The Bedford Garden Club regularly supports the park through plant sales and community efforts.
It’s a peaceful, productive spot — even with its location near the GM plant — where you’ll see families, retirees, and first-time gardeners side-by-side.
